Obituary for Larry Moffett
Larry Moffett was born on November 19, 1955 in Jones County to the late Cornelius Barnes and the late Channie Moffett. He was adopted and raised by the late Nettie Thompson. He has lived in Taylorsville, Mississippi for the majority of his life, with the exception of during the late seventies and early eighties when he lived on the Mississippi gulf coast.
He graduated from Taylorsville High School, and after high school, he worked at Solar Hardware and then at the shipyard. In 1983, he began working at Howard Industries, Inc. in Laurel, MS and for the next 36 years, he perfected his welding skills and became a Grade A Welder and Regulator Leak Tester. He was a hard worker who took pride in the quality of his work.
At an early age, he gave his life to Christ and united with the Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church of Taylorsville, Mississippi where he has been active in almost every auxiliary affiliated with the church since childhood. He has served on the usher board and was a member of the Sweet Pilgrim Usher Association. He sang in the choir and was at one time the President. He has been very active in Sunday School while serving as the Superintendent and a teacher. He was a member of the Brotherhood and loved attending mid-week prayer service. He supported and followed the church on many occasions and visitations. He was currently a member of the choir, the church Financial Secretary and a Deacon.
In 1979, Larry was united in holy matrimony to Catherine Ruth until her death in 1989 and to this union three children were born Lekishia Rechelle, Regina Rena, and Carlos Uriah. In 2010, Larry was united in holy matrimony to Sarah Louise and Larry cared for Sarah’s sons Jasen D’Marte and Corey My’Kal as his own throughout their courtship and during their nine-year marriage.
Larry was a devout Christian, loving husband, amazing father and paw-paw, dedicated friend, talented welder, and all-around great man. He took the time to know you and if he took an interest, he met you where you were in life and you all took your journey together. He loved his community and had a vested interest in making sure all people were treated right. He loved his Masonic brothers and was a dedicated and active member of his lodge. He believed in the practice of fair civil rights and was a member of the NAACP. Those who really knew him, knew he loved his Indianapolis Colts and loved even more going to and watching any football games, especially the teams his sons and grandson played and coached. He was the ultimate handyman who could fix anything-his daughters waited for him to come to their home so that he could “take care of it”. Unquestionably, antique, muscle and sports cars were his passion. He loved going to see them in car shows and in museum settings; he loved driving them and had recently began collecting them with his sons. He lived for traveling and taking his vacations whether it was to visit one of his children or spending time at his timeshare or traveling to tropical locations. He loved life and could not wait to retire so that he could travel even more. But, nothing could trump (Daddy, we know you are smiling on this reference.) his unconditional love for his children and grandchildren. They were his world as he was theirs. Everything centered around daddy and paw-paw.
Larry was preceded in death by his mothers, father, first wife, sister, Alice Moffett, and brother, David Barnes.
He leaves to cherish his memories a loving and devoted wife, Sarah; two (2) daughters, Lekishia (Charles) White of Oxnard, California, Regina (Steve) Ellis of Tampa, Florida; four (4) sons, Carlos (Charita) Moffett of Richmond, Virginia, Jasen (Briana) Fairley of Collins, Mississippi, Sajid Foster of Tamuning, Guam, Corey (Dominiq) Fairley of Taylorsville, Mississippi; eight (8) brothers and six (6) sisters: Paul (Anne) Moffett, Howard (Rose) Moffett, Gloria (Donald) Bennett, Shirley (Billy) Parchman, Lolita Pittman, James (Ann) Moffett, Annie (Dwight) Norris, Dianne (James) Crosby, Connie Barnes, Thomas Barnes, Johnnie Lee Barnes, Jimmie Dale Barnes, Matthew Barnes, and Sandra (Jeffrey) Anderson; one aunt; twenty (20) grandchildren; one (1) great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and four (4) granddogs.
